What we do.
The Illecillewaet Greenbelt Society strives to ensure that the area along the Illecillewaet River, which encompasses both woodlands and meadows, remains a natural riparian zone that can be dually accessed for recreational purposes.
The key goals of the society are to:
maintain a natural habitat for wildlife within city limits
conserve the natural resources
promote responsible use of the area
The IGS achieves these goals by:
creating and maintaining a network of multi-use trails
winter track setting to allow for winter recreation on these trails
removal of invasive species
implementing conservation projects in cooperation with local organizations
preserving and restoring habitat
Winter Grooming and Upkeep
Access to the Revelstoke Illecillewaet Greenbelt in the winter is made possible solely by volunteers. A home built, fully electric trail grooming machine ‘The Pathmaster’ (see photos below) is used to pack down and smooth out a winter surface for easier travel. Your support as a member of the IGS will go directly into grooming the winter trails for biking, walking, running and nordic skiing, as well as trail upkeep in the other months of the year.
Summer Trail Maintenance and Wildlife Conservation
Summer trail maintenance on the Revelstoke Illecillewaet Greenbelt is conducted by volunteers. Mowing and brushing pathways in the grass, building bridges over streams and flooded areas, and maintaining trail tread is an ongoing effort. In addition, projects to conserve wildlife habitat such as installing bat boxes and osprey nest areas are spearheaded with support from organizations such as BC Hydro.
